Spotify Launches Brand Apps

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

While Spotify specializes in music streaming, it is also aiming to make itself more like a social network. The social media agency would be wise to start thinking of it as such. Spotify allows friends and sharing. There is even an ability for users to message other friends, so it is not limited to just music.

Next Week Spotify will announce the newest addition, which is very similar to FaceBook: brand apps. Spotify has an API and allows anyone to build a functioning app for free. The first brands to seize the opportunity will be AT&T, McDonald’s and Reebok. The apps will provide a deeper integration for users within the service as well as bring in more users to the service.

Brands can build playlists and even join in partnerships with artists or labels as a way to provide users with music that might be related and also energizing to customers. The social media agency can also use Spotify’s new service to capture some of the sharing that happens as a way to build a customer base for clients.

Google Tablet To Be Unveiled Soon

Monday, April 9th, 2012

There is a growing buzz about the rumor Google is developing a tablet. The move would be similar to Google’s Nexus phone. It would probably sport a slick design and the newest version of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean depending how long it took to release).

The Google tablet would help propel the tablet explosion by providing a credible alternative to the iPad. While there are other tablets, none of them currently appears to be pushing technology or design limits. Google would be able to do that.

The big effect of a Google tablet, though, would be to structure the Android community. There are numerous versions of Android and each runs on different devices of different sizes. Android fragmentation hampers web site developments and is seen by many as a weakness of digital marketing. A Google tablet, however, would provide a model for other developers to achieve. That would make the job of the social media agency much easier. The tablet would push other developers for consistent updates, which would help advertisers maintain a consistent message.

We will know more in a few months. Until then there will be more and more speculation as Google’s team makes improvements in its design and performance. The social media agency should be aware of the coming changes and also try to push its partners to update ads and servers for better Android integration.

Tablets To Replace Laptops

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

The exploding tablet market has always been entertaining to watch. Not only did the genre explode onto the scene, but it helped reshape the way digital agencies need to approach mobile computing. Although the issue had always been about supplementing computing needs. The thought was that people would have tablets and smartphones and also either a laptop or a desktop. According to a new study by Poll Position that assumption is suspect.

tablet-vs-laptop

46% of adults believe that tablets will replace laptops. This belief is especially true among adults (30-58) and young adults (18-29). This has a couple of meanings for the digital agency. People either think tablets are productive enough or that they are close to productive enough to be productivity devices in the near future. This will open up space for the digital agency to target tablet ads towards productivity devices and not just as consumption machines. The digital agency needs to also recognize this as the beginning of the end for non-mobile marketing. If productivity turns to mobile devices then it makes sense to only specialize in advertisements geared towards mobile devices, which can be displayed on desktops.

Even if the tablet does not replace the laptop, this belief will accelerate tablet sales. Tablets will take a larger share of people’s computing attentions in the future.

Businesses To Increase iPad Purchases

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Among tablets the iPad reigns supreme. That is especially true for business purchases. The only tablet to be of any serious competition is the Kindle Fire and as far as businesses are concerned it is not an option. The Kindle Fire is built for consumers and not for productivity, leaving the iPad as the only real option for businesses interested in a tablet. This is important because more and more businesses are looking to compliment their workflow with tablet devices.

Even small businesses, those with less than 50 employees, are likely to purchase a tablet in 2012. A new survey by NPD shows that 54% of these small businesses plan to purchase tablets this year. As the size of the business grows so too does the desire for a tablet purchase.

The digital marketing agency needs to keep in mind the growing importance of tablets not only for consumption but also as productivity tools. This mean there needs to be a change in what is advertised on tablets, but there also needs to be a change in how advertising is conducted. The better advertisement on a productivity app, for example, will not require the user to break away from the productivity app.

Because of the iPad’s dominance in the tablet field the digital marketer also needs to step up efforts on those aspects of the iPad that are most popular. Sometimes these apps are also popular on Android based mobile devices, but the digital firm needs to look specifically to the apps most popular on the iPad.

Spotify Adds Radio Function

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Spotify did take the world, especially the US by storm a few months ago. While Spotify has a large catalog of music to stream to its users, there were some deficiencies. One of the largest was an ability to compete with Pandora. Pandora is the go-to music streaming service when somebody does not know precisely what they would like to listen to. Pandora allows the user to select a genre and then its engine will play music along those lines offering the user a thumbs-down option on specific tracks not being enjoyed.

Spotify, by contrast, required people to know precisely what they wanted to hear or to know the playlist to be heard. To correct this gap Spotify has introduced a Spotify radio function, which will help it combat Pandora as the industry standard for discovering music. As of now, Spotify’s recommendation engine does not seem as capable as Pandora’s. Spotify tends to play artists that seem related without measuring the actual tracks’ similarities, which is a feature of Pandora’s recommendation engine. It is reasonable, however, to expect Spotify to improve its method and that will allow it to better compete with Pandora when all a listener’s needs can be satisfied within the same application.

The digital agency needs to keep music streaming services in mind as more and more people are increasingly tuning in. The bandwidth problem is increasingly being resolved and these services’ catalog make an affordable alternative to a locally based song library. This increased growth will make the advertising on these services increasingly attractive, especially as these services improve their abilities to target ads to users.

Each year thousands of the worlds foremost leaders in the field of lighting gather at the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair to share their ideas and see the future of the lighting industry. With well over 2,000 exhibitors, the event is one of the largest in the world, and since it is aimed at connecting businesses with customers, it draws all of the major corporations.

One of the special focuses of the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair in 2011 is the “LED and Green Lighting Zone” which will feature the products aimed to “cater the strong demand for LED, energy-saving and other environmentally friendly products”. LED Manufacturers are going above and beyond this year to impress the more than 30,000 buyers that are expected to be there.
